Japanese carmaker Honda Motor has launched its first small car in India to challenge the dominance of existing players like Suzuki and Hyundai, in this potential growth market.
The company has started selling the Jazz compact hatchback. The car has a 1.2-liter gasoline engine. The company said that the engine has been researched and developed at the Honda R&D centre in Tochigi, Japan, to suit Indian road and safety conditions. It also said that 77% of its parts would be sourced locally.
Jazz will be manufactured at a factory near Greater Noida in the northern state of UP, by Honda Siel Cars India, a joint venture between Honda and Siel of India.
According to the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM), small cars accounted for 73% of all cars sold in the FY ended March 31.
