Mahindra showcases six new electric vehicles at Auto Expo 2018

Mahindra & Mahindra has introduced a range of electric vehicles at the ongoing Auto Expo 2018, being held in Greater Noida, India.

The automaker has come up with its concept of ‘Future of Mobility’, which is centered around three pillars, Clean, Connected and Convenient.

Among the showcased vehicles include ATOM, UDO Concept, Treo, e-Cosmo, e-KUV100, e2o NXT, e-Verito, e-Supro and electric vehicle architecture Mahindra Electric Scalable Modular Architecture (MESMA).

UDO is a compact two-seater concept electric mobility pod. It was developed to address the issues plaguing urban mobility including traffic congestion and pollution.

It is targeted towards tech savvy urban citizens and offers an enclosed space with micro climate control, lighting, touch-screen infotainment.

ATOM is a public transportation mobility concept designed to cater to the diverse needs of passengers. It is powered by the company’s new electric powertrain which features batteries that can be swapped to extend the vehicle’s range.

It is also equipped with connectivity system, which can help in bookings and payments seamless and easy. At the same time, it also allows to connect with multiple transport modes, keeping passengers posted about the next departing train, bus or flight and the nearest boarding points in real time.

e-KUV100 is claimed to be the first electric SUV in India. The vehicle combines the features of an SUV and an electric vehicle.

Mahindra claims that the e-KUV100 offers a range of 140km and optional fast charging which can charge 80% of the battery in less than an hour. The vehicle also offers features such as smartphone connectivity options, remote diagnostics, battery status, cabin pre-cooling, location tracking. The vehicle can also monitor driving pattern.

Treo is Mahindra’s battery powered three wheeler. The vehicle has been developed to promote mass adoption of electric vehicles in the country. It will facilitate last mile movement and connectivity in tier 1 as well as tier 2 and 3 cities.

e2o NXT is the next version of the already released e2o Plus. It boasts an improved exterior and interior along with a larger infotainment system.

e-COSMO electric vehicle has a direct drive motor which was developed in partnership with Canadian company TM4. The electric bus is also equipped with battery management system and regenerative braking system. Mahindra says that the electric bus offers less cost of ownership.

The company has also revealed its electric vehicle architecture Mahindra Electric Scalable Modular Architecture (MESMA). This architecture claims to make a major shift from the present 48/72V system of EVs in India to the 380Volt modular powertrain that uses e-motors by TM4 and batteries from LG chemicals.

The modular architecture can be adjusted in terms of length and width to accommodate different kinds of vehicles, while retaining the efficiency and performance.

The company claims that this platform can open a range of opportunities to its group companies including SsangYong and Pininfarina amongst others.
