Japanese carmaker Mazda Motor is set to launch its new Mazda2 vehicle with SKYACTIV-D 1.5 clean diesel engine.

SKYACTIV-D 1.5 is said to provide very low compression ratio in same way as the new SKYACTIV-D 2.2 clean diesel engine, which will be available in models such as the Mazda CX-5 vehicle.

According to the company, the SKYACTIV-D 1.5 diesel engine delivers an output of 77kW at 4,000rpm and a peak torque of 250Nm, which is equal to the 2.5L gasoline engine.

Increase in the torque is a result of very low compression ratio of 14.8:1 offered by the engine that boasts outstanding dynamic performance as well as linear acceleration.

The new engine also features excellent environmental performance without resorting to expensive NOx aftertreatment systems.

SKYACTIV-D 1.5 clean diesel engine will power Mazda2, which is scheduled to be introduced to the Japanese market where it is said to comply with the Post New Long-term Emissions Regulations as a diesel-powered compact car.

Features of the new powertrain include combustion mode transition control technology with high dispersion solenoid injectors to reduce cooling loss that is supported stepped egg-shaped pistons that reduce contact between the flame and chamber wall.

The engine has high-pressure EGR and low pressure EGR systems to offer better fuel economy and environmental performance, engine cooling system with cooling water control valves (CCV) and water jacket spacers.

Additionally, the variable turbine geometry turbocharger with rotation sensor delivers pressure from low through to high engine speeds, while the water-cooled intercooler combined to the intake manifold improves acceleration response and turbocharger efficiency.
