ABR Staff Writer Published 21 July 2011

Tesla Motors, a luxury electric sports cars maker, has signed a $100m agreement to supply electric powertrain equipment for Toyota's Rav4 electric compact SUV.

The electric sports cars maker will supply the battery, charging system, inverter, motor, and related software to power Toyota's RAV4.

The company said that the production of the compact SUV is expected to start next year and continue through 2014.

Toyota has taken a $50m stake in Tesla last year and signed an agreement to use Tesla's electric power train in the electric RAV4.

Toyota's joint venture with General Motors, New United Motor Manufacturing, sold its shuttered auto plant in Fremont to Tesla for $42m.

The luxury electric sports cars maker said that it will use the plant to produce its next car, the Model S.
